    Job description:

    Position Summary

    The Shelter Advocate Relief is responsible for providing direct trauma-informed services to survivors of domestic violence and their children by ensuring a safe, welcoming, and supported environment at the shelter. The Shelter Advocate Relief is a part-time position, and shifts are provided on an as-needed basis, including daytime, overnight, weekends, and holidays to ensure adequate coverage of the shelter program. The position includes access to information of a confidential nature. Strict adherence to agency procedures and protocols is required.

    Direct Service

    • Provide a range of supportive services, including crisis intervention, emotional support, translation, interpretation, referrals, advocacy, and safety planning to residents of the shelter program.

    • Respond to a 24-hour hotline to provide domestic violence survivors with information about the services and resources available to them.

    • Facilitate cooperative living and encourage resident participation in the shelter program.

    • Model and actively promote positive nurturing interactions between adults and children, demonstrate non-violent conflict resolution, and utilize non-violent forms of guidance.

    • Document services provided to residents using the database system.

    • Complete shelter orientations, including welcome procedures, guidelines, and exit paperwork with residents upon entering and exiting the shelter.

    • Provide services in a manner that is sensitive to cultural differences, ensuring respect for and understanding of the diverse backgrounds and experiences of each resident.

    • Attend agency meetings, mandatory shelter team meetings, and weekly supervision meetings. (This includes meetings scheduled for the evening)

    • Assist with stocking and distributing food and other supplies for client use.

    • Gather resident belongings as needed and clean/sanitize the rooms for turnover.

    • Perform routine chores, cleaning tasks, and room checks assigned.

    Qualifications/Requirements

    • Understand and utilize principles of trauma-informed care, with knowledge of domestic violence dynamics and crisis intervention.

    • A degree in a social services or related field and at least two years of direct service experience working with vulnerable populations and diverse backgrounds.

    • Experience working in a shelter facility is a plus.

    • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of the 40-Hour Domestic Violence Training.

    • Ability to meet the needs of diverse individuals with limited English proficiency, including experience providing translation or interpretation.

    • Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.

    • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team while always maintaining professionalism.

    • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

    • Strong organization, recordkeeping, and time management skills with solid attention to detail.

    • Ability to deescalate emergency situations while maintain resident safety.

    • Available to work at least two days a week, including one weekend day, during any shift.

    • Collaborate with the supervisor, staff, and participants to reach common goals and objectives.

    • Fluency in written and spoken Armenian, Farsi, Russian or Spanish is preferred.

    • Maintain appropriate boundaries with residents, donors, and staff.

    • Complete a LiveScan background check.

    • Complete Mandated Reporter Training within 1 week of start date.

    • Must possess a valid driver’s license, provide proof of insurance, and maintain a clean driving record.

    • Have access to a vehicle during work hours and willingness to conduct mobile advocacy.

    • Valid TB test within 90 days of employment.

    Physical Requirements

    • Work requires the ability to ascend or descend stairs, agility to perform physical tasks.

    • Regularly exposed to cleaning products, chemicals, and solvents.

    • Requires the ability to move or transport supplies or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds unassisted, while ascending or descending stairs.
